The Sonik DominatorX Travel Spinning Rods come under the beady eye of Angler's Mail tackle editor Richard Howard. He's the No.1 products inspector, checking out loads of quality kit every week.

Description: four-piece lure rod range, each one supplied in a travel tube.

Specifications: an 8 ft (10-30 g) and two 9 ft (15-40 g and 30-50 g) models, each featuring a light, fast-actioned blank; slim, ergonomic cork handle with rubberised cork reinforcement; quality DPS reel seat and hook-keeper ring; ‘K’-style, low-friction guides; angled anti-tangle rings; anti-frap tip ring; Cordura rod tube and bag.

My verdict: I’ve always liked these types of rods, as you can use them for lots of fishing applications, not just lure fishing.

The lengths seem right, and the casting-weight ratings will allow you to punch a wide range of lures out, from a spinner for perch to a softbait or hardbait for big pike.

Perfect for storing in the boot of your car, you could also use  them for stalking carp, touch-legering for barbel or casting a lure for mackerel or bass.

I like the cork handles, and the guides should do their job.

It is a nice touch that Sonik have supplied the rods in a hard tube, for protection.

Simply put, they are multi-discipline travel rods for under £50.

Prices: £44.99-£49.99.
