The Sean Simms Disgorgers comes under the beady eye of Angler's Mail tackle editor Richard Howard. He's the No.1 products inspector, checking out loads of quality kit every week.

Description: hand-carved disgorgers.

Specifications: the set of two floating disgorgers is made from oak and walnut, and comes in a velvet pouch; the larger Beast version is made from beech; all are supplied with a cord and split ring that attaches to a brass eye on each disgorger.

My verdict: Sean Simms has crafted these disgorgers from environmentally friendly materials. They are light, strong and varnished, so I’m sure that they’ll last for a long time.

Sean’s focus is to make fishing tackle products with sustainable base materials, and even the packaging is 100 per cent recyclable and biodegradable.

The Beast disgorger is for removing larger hooks from bigger fish, the idea coming about after he caught a 5 lb River Cherwell chub on a big lump of flake on a size 4 hook. He struggled to remove the hook with forceps, so the idea of a bigger disgorger was born. The set of two smaller disgorgers is for removing smaller hooks, down to a size 16.

Starting life in an Oxfordshire village workshop, these unhooking tools are just a couple of the eco-friendly accessories offered under the Sean Simms Fishing Tackle brand.

You get top marks from me, Sean, as the industry desperately needs to start looking at ways of reducing plastic. These would make a great present for someone. Visit www.seansimms.co.uk
