The Rapala X-Rap Scoop Lures come under the beady eye of Angler's Mail tackle editor Richard Howard. He's the No.1 products inspector, checking out loads of quality kit every week.
Description: a quality, hard plastic, ‘spoon-like’ lure range.
Specifications: 14 cm-long; weighs 68 g; swimming depth of 1.6 m; S-shaped, hard plastic body; realistic, chrome finish; designed for attracting large predators such as pike; size 2/0 and 4/0 VMC Coastal Black Treble hooks.
My verdict: I would happily rove the bank of my local reservoir with a selection of these long-casting hardbaits. The Scaled Baitfish pattern (pictured in the middle) looks like a herring, the other finishes look pretty realistic, too.
They weigh around 2 oz, so you’ll be able to punch them out a fair distance, before cranking your reel handle to get them ‘rocking and rolling’ along a horizontal plain. You could then pause your retrieve, to let them sink to a different depth, before ‘rocking and rolling’ them again.
As they can be cast quite a long way, you can cover a lot of water, and with a 1.6 m (5 ft-plus) swimming depth, you can imagine the realistic, chrome finish catching any light in the water.
The shallow, S-shaped body has convex and concave sides, which helps to make them look like a real fish.
Coming with internal weight, a bit of a rattle and sticky-sharp VMC trebles, they look as if they’ll handle plenty of strikes from pike. Everything about them looks spot-on.
