The Rapala Original Floater Lures come under the beady eye of Angler's Mail tackle editor Richard Howard. He's the No.1 products inspector, checking out loads of quality kit every week.

Description: a floating lure.

Specifications: available in 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 18 cm sizes; largest size has a swimming depth to 3.3 m, the other sizes from 1.2-1.8 m; mounted with VMC Black Nickel trebles, from size 12 for the smallest up to size 2 for the largest; floating, balsa bodies; minnow profile; stainless wire construction; hand-tuned; tank-tested; multiple finishes.

My verdict: based on the first Rapala made in 1936, this lure has a lot going for it.

Twitch it across the surface, make it dive by reeling in, add shot on the line to sink it deeper, troll it or create a paternoster rig with a three-way swivel and bounce it a foot or two above the bottom.

It will wobble in the water when you retrieve it steadily, its flank reflecting light as you do so. You could also try what I call the ‘pop and stop’ method, trying to mimic a wounded fish that is darting around erratically.

Basically, you can fish it in many ways and it will catch fish, mark my words.

Thanks to a multitude of high-quality body finishes, from natural to high visibility, you should be able to find a pattern that triggers a response on any given day.

Prices: £7.95-£12.95.
