The Mystic Match 7019B X-strong Hooks come under the beady eye of Angler's Mail tackle editor Richard Howard. He's the No.1 products inspector, checking out loads of quality kit every week.

MATCH hooks don’t come much stronger than the super-strong, eyed Mystic Match 7019B X-strong Hook pattern.

A hook for margin ‘hippos’ (carp), they are also likely to catch the eye of specialist anglers, for specimens of other species.

Needle-sharp, forged and made of high-carbon steel, they come in sizes 6-16 and feature a Barbarian Technical Locking Curve.

My understanding of this curve is that once a fish is hooked, the flesh of the mouth (where it has been pricked) will gather at the bottom of the bend, where you want it to be, for a secure hold.

The slightly beaked point and downturned eye also help to ensure that the needle-sharp point goes in and stays in.

These hooks are available in barbed and barbless formats. They have a PTFE coating, to improve penetration power up to 50 per cent, and I particularly like the gape.

VMC have told me that they are ideal for Method feeder, pellet feeder and float fishing, being just right for lots of baits, including corn, meat, bunches of dead maggot and paste.

Price: £1.99 for ten.
