The Middy Mugger-Wagg Floats come under the beady eye of Angler's Mail tackle editor Richard Howard. He's the No.1 products inspector, checking out loads of quality kit every week.

Description: mini floats for fishing baits up in the water.

Specifications: 0.3 and 0.4 g floats; straight, clear bodies; buoyant, straight tips.

My verdict: these new Mugger-Waggs are designed to be locked on the line with a couple of No.8 shot, for fishing in the surface layers for cruising carp.

They measure just 5.5 and 6.5 cm, and you can fish them on running line or a pole. I envisage these being ‘micro stealth wagglers’, as they create minimal disturbance when cast into the water.

It’s best not to use any further shot down your line, as you want your hook bait to fall at the same speed as your loosefeed.

I recommend that you fish 8 mm banded pellets, a cube of slow-sinking meat or banded maggots on the hook.

It’s a good idea to wear a cap and fish-spotting glasses, as it’ll help you to spot fish near the surface.

Price: £1.50 each.
