The Kodex Klampdown Butt Rest comes under the beady eye of Angler's Mail tackle editor Richard Howard. He's the No.1 products inspector, checking out loads of quality kit every week.

Description: butt rest for abbreviated or shrink wrap rod handles.

Specifications: two changeable rod-gripping inserts with a soft, TPE centre, to protect rods; brass thread; colour-coded inserts, including one that has been designed to glow in the dark, to match your bobbins.

My verdict: this is a simple but clever idea, even without the mini colour-coded inserts, which can be added to match the colour of your bobbins.

Each rest comes with two rod-gripping inserts, to marry with abbreviated or shrink wrap rod handles. The tight grip is useful when you’re expecting fast takes with your reel in free-spool mode, or when you ‘lock-up’ your reel when fishing tight to snags.

The rod should release easily on the strike.

Kind to your rod, thanks to the Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) material. I can see a few barbel anglers using them, as well as  carpers.

If you’ve got full Duplon or full cork handles, you’re likely to find that they are too big for them but… watch this space, as they say.

Price: £7.50.
