The Kodex CX-i Carp Rods come under the beady eye of Angler's Mail tackle editor Richard Howard. He's the No.1 products inspector, checking out loads of quality kit every week.

Description: mid-priced specimen carp rods.

Specifications: a pair of 12 ft rods with a 3 or 3.25 lb test curve; full carbon, lightweight blanks; a forgiving tip and a reserve of power towards the butt section; DPS reel seat with ergonomic butt grip; an anti-frap tip guide and 50 mm butt guides on both models.

My verdict: the younger brother to the £400 Kodex KX-i rods, these models have similar guides, a progressive action and a much more affordable price tag.

They look like they’ll cover most carping methods, the 3 lb being the rod of choice, unless you’re punching out heavy payloads, PVA bags or fishing at extreme range, when the 3.25 lb would be my choice.

Coming with a modern look and a nice playing action, they will suit carping on a lot of waters. Bob-Co Tackle (www.bobcotackle.co.uk) are selling them for £119.99 each, or you could take advantage of their ‘buy two get one free’ deal – three rods for £240!

Price: £139.99.
