Marine science instructor Jasmine Sanata found the serpent-like off the southern Californian coast whilst snorkeling and needed 15 people to assist her in retrieving it.
The fish still remains a mystery to marine biologists with little know about its life cycle as it inhabits depths ranging from 200 to 1,000 metres and beyond.
They have been seen distressed on the surface where they raise their heads from the water.
