BAIT wizard Leighton McDonnell was inspired by Christmas to tempt his latest huge chub.

Turkey meat helped Leighton notch up his fourth 7 lb chub of the winter, having developed a special paste.

His latest unusual bait is made with Polish Spichlerz Rusiecki turkey leg meat and mixed with cranberry sauce.

The 7 lb 3 oz chevin (pictured above) came during a session on a Bedfordshire stretch of the Great Ouse river.

Leighton, a chartered surveyor, has also caught a chub brace of 6 lb 8 oz and 6 lb 6 oz using the turkey mixture.

It also includes wheat gluten, soya flour and ground trout pellet powder to bind it.

The Tring, Hertfordshire-based specialist explained to Angler’s Mail: “The paste contains a whole jar of the turkey leg meat.

“Added to this is a third of a jar of Ocean Spray Whole Berry Cranberry Sauce which is also high in glutamate, just like sweetcorn, to give a unique smell and taste.”

Leighton told Angler’s Mail: “The turkey meat is also high in jelly and spices and smells knockout and is available from polish food shops or the largest supermarkets.

“I have been using their chicken meat for some time and have caught several six-pounders on it, but thought I would try this over Christmas.

“Unfortunately I had flu over Christmas and simply spent 20 hours a day on the sofa for two weeks.

“I use the paste popped up 18 inches after being wrapped around three 13mm cork balls hair rigged on a running drilled bullet.

“After feeding 50 pieces of 20 mm paste over two swims and leaving half an hour, the first fish of 4 lb 12 oz came after just two minutes.

“So I moved to the second after tying back some willow branches to create a swim and reach an extensive mid river crease.

“The ‘7’ took almost immediately and I had to stand and follow the fish by walking down just to keep in touch,’ added Leighton, who used a size 4 hook and 6 lb line.
