THE often hushed-up River Taff in South Wales has produced the shock on the season so far with this 18 lb 1 oz barbel which fell to the rods of Nathan Baird.

The fish described as ‘spawned out’ would easily be a contender for a new British record later in the season when it starts to pack on the pounds and is sure to send shockwaves through the specimen hunters’ grapevine.

The Taff has been quietly producing many big barbel over the past few years but the fishing is anything but easy with many stretches banning night fishing, limited swims and some rather precarious areas that the fish inhabit.
