MANY anglers managed to start their spring fishing belatedly with tench action, making up for lost time.

Amongst those anglers targeting with tench as lockdown rules eased, Ryan Hayden came within a whisker of his PB when he matted this fantastic 9 lb 10 oz tinca.

Tackling a secret gravel pit, Ryan, 27, from Brackley, Northamptonshire, added other tench of 7 lb 11 oz and 7 lb 12 oz.

The Leeda communications  co-ordinator told Angler’s Mail: “With fishing having been given the green light, I jumped at the opportunity of getting back on the bank for a night or two.

“I never imagined getting the chance to fish for tench this spring, so you can imagine my reaction when this stunning 9 lb 10 oz finally slid over the waiting net.

“The fish was caught from a tiny area of gravel surrounded by silt, just big enough for one rig.

“My tactics were simple. I fished an 85 g Method feeder with a very sticky mix of 2 mm krill pellets, groundbait and clusters.

“A 4 in. supple braided link and a size 9 hook baited with two fake red maggots on a hair completed the set-up.

“I cast the feeders over a liberal amount of hemp, dead maggots and 2 mm pellets.

“I’ll be out as much as I can, chasing a double until they spawn. Well, I’ll be out as much a man can with a young family.

“I hope to beat my personal best fish of 9 lb 14 oz,” concluded Ryan.

He starred on the cover of Angler’s Mail with his 9 lb 10 oz tench, and many other UK anglers have been reporting fine fish to AM magazine since lockdown rules were eased.
