TWO stunning double-figure barbel were caught in the same small club match.

The biggest of the two River Dove barbel tipped the competition scales to 15 lb for Marco Julian.

He was competing near Egginton, Derbyshire. The specimen helped him to finish third in the 26-entry Charlie Lloyd Memorial at the Burton Mutual AA water.

Derby-based Marco, 25, fished a maggot feeder to tempt chub, before taming the barbel, which was weighed and returned immediately.

Neil Lawrence chipped in with a 10 lb River Dove barbel, tempted on a feeder with meat.

Neil’s specimen came after he had lost two estimated double-figure ‘whiskers’ while float fishing for chub.

He told Angler’s Mail how a small group of river anglers are trying to make the stretch more popular.

River Dove barbel

Neil Lawrence displays the smaller of the impressive River Dove barbel caught in the same match.

Neil, 48, explained: “It is a fabulous, forgotten stretch of river.

“Us die-hard, ageing anglers are trying to revive it as a match venue.

“The winner was Nick West, who caught 23 lb of chub and grayling on a stick float and maggots from the weir field. He was followed by Paul Pountney with a similar bag of fish for 19 lb.

“Thanks to Clive Lloyd for running another excellent match, and well done to the anglers who raised £150 for the Burton Stroke Club.”
