A BRITISH record-equalling 5 lb 15 oz perch has set the big fish world alight – falling from a trout venue after top coarse specialists had stopped fishing for giant stripys.

The capture from Hanningfield Reservoir, near Chelmsford, Essex, has not come as major surprise to those in-the-know, but small commercial coarse pools have come to dominate the headlines.

The giant’s captor, Ovidiuus Venskus, targeted an area in-between Hall Point and the Peninsula with a classic lure – a red/white No.4 Mepps Spinner.
Bromley, Kent-based Ovidiuus was aboard a boat at the Essex and Suffolk Water controlled venue, which allows any-method trout fishing.

Hanningfield senior ranger Graham Brown said: ‘The potential is massive and I am quietly confident there is a record swimming around out there.’
