FATHER and son double act Barry and Ben O’Connor defied the drawbag to win this year’s British Carp Angling Championships, and in doing so made up for not being picked for Korda Carp Team England.

The Sutton, Surrey pair, who had qualified from Farlows, Buckinghamshire, caught 180 lb 6 oz to top a field of 14 pairs at Broadlands Fishery, Hampshire.

Their win, and £10,000 jackpot, came on the eve of the World Carp Championships where the new-look England team – excluding the O’Connors, who came close in selection events – compete for glory in Romania.
