CARL HILL returned to specialist angling five years ago having had a 20-year break, and is now pursuing fish he never would have been able to in his more youthful days.

On only his third visit to Surrey’s Marsh Farm Complex the Loughborough, Leicestershire-based area operations manager bagged four jumbo crucian carp – this stunning 3 lb 9 oz sample, plus others going 2 lb 14 oz, 3 lb 3 oz and 3 lb 4 oz.

The 58-year-old exclaimed: “I broke my PB three times in the session. The fish all came at extreme range probably due to recent angling pressure pushing them out from the margins as normally befits crucian fishing.”

He cast a Method feeder and 2 mm micro pellets, offering a single buoyant plastic maggot to a 16 hook.

The catch made him a weekly winner in Angler’s Mail magazine’s Korum Specimen Cup.
