STILLWATERS could be the future of thriving river barbel stocks – if a pioneering scheme works as planned.

Kings Weir fishery on the River Lea in Hertfordshire hope a pilot scheme to grow baby barbel up to 2 lb predator-proof fish will mean their future is safe.

So they plan a pond with a flow and a waterfall to keep the young fish happy until they are ready to return to their natural environment.

Barbel ace Jerry Gleeson is helping to raise funds to get the scheme off the ground and thinks it is badly needed despite the season ticket water last week producing a venue record 16 lb 2 oz beard to Jerry Brown.
