THREE new fisheries have been hit by the dreaded and deadly koi herpes virus to bring the 2010 total to seven but there are fears there will be more confirmed cases before the autumn is out.

Lancashire prolific complex Bradshaw Hall Fisheries in Bolton, Church Pond at Ryston, Norfolk, and Risby Park near Beverley, East Yorkshire have all been confirmed as having the carp killer KHV.

But the good news is spring viraemia of carp which was a huge fish killer in the 1980s and 90s looks to have been eradicated as there hasn’t been a confirmed case in the wild for years.

So the government are applying to the European Union to be recognized as officially free of SVC.

Sadly KHV doesn’t look like going away in the near future and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs after a feasibility study will not try an eradication programme.
