WHEN the lockdown rules are relaxed in the UK, could the crucian record be the first one to be beaten?

Scott Poulter bagged this giant 4 lb 3 oz crucian carp from Johnsons Lake just before the country went into lockdown mode, and all waters closed.

Johnsons Lake, in Surrey, is the record-holding venue and is run by the excellent Godalming AS.

Southampton, Hampshire-based Scott, 45, fished a Method feeder with a small plastic hook bait on a size 16 hook to a 5 lb trace.

Like everywhere else, Godalming AS  stopped all fishing at their waters, including the popular day ticket Marsh Farm fishery, due to the coronavirus crisis.

Duncan Charman shows his giant crucian carp. He writes every week in Angler’s Mail, and is one of many interesting columnists in the mag.

Crucian carp hopes dashed – for now

Angler’s Mail magazine columnist Duncan Charman got tipped off by Scott that the crucians were feeding as spring kicked in.

Duncan nipped down to land this 4 lb 2 oz specimen on a pellet cone set-up. His high hopes for even bigger fish were also thwarted by the lockdown rules.

Duncan said: “Everything was looking good for a productive final few weeks before the venue closes down in mid-April for its own Close Season.

“The fishery, which produced two 4 lb 10 oz British records a few years back, still has record potential.”
