A LEADING all-round big fish angler got in the big tench action in fine style with a brace of tench scaling 10 lb 6 oz, 10 lb 4 oz plus another at 8 lb 14 oz.
In an unprecedented year for double-figure tench, Joe Royffe had his brace from a 125 acre Lea Valley gravel pit.
The 29-year-old from Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, said: “Following a good run of short session tench fishing, I was rewarded with two doubles.
“I have spent two springs on this venue, and have had a fair few tench, but the number of 8s and 9s I’ve had this season has been more than ever, but I was really struggling to catch a ‘double’.
“Arriving late, at around midday, I Spombed out two pints of hemp and two pints of casters, and fished simple inline lead set ups with a PVA bag attached.
“All of my tench the past few weeks have fallen to double artificial casters with a size 16 hook.
“I only use two rods for all of my tench fishing, even though three are allowed, as I feel that three is unnecessary.
“If it’s fishing well you’ll catch with two, and if it’s fishing poor you’d likely catch nothing with ten or more rods,” added delivery driver Joe, who starred on the cover of Angler’s Mail.
He’s since moved onto rudd, enjoying success with big fish to 3 lb 7 oz on the River Cam in Cambridgeshire..
