ONE of the biggest fishery operations ever is in progress following the discovery of a non-native species in one of the largest and respected holiday sites in the UK.

Clawford Vineyard in Devon – scene of numerous successful Angler’s Mail features – were rocked after the Environment Agency discovered topmouth gudgeon in two of their 17 lakes.

The EA – with 100 per cent funding from the Department for Environment, Fisheries and Rural Affairs as they are the highest category 5 risk – spent many ten of thousands of pounds and dozens of staff to net and quarantine onsite as many specimen fish they could. They then deployed liquid rotenone to kill all the remaining fish in all of the lakes.
