American firm NutriStrategy put general fishing as the same as weight lifting with a 14-stone person burning 279 calories per hour.
And with most anglers fishing for over five hours that is over 1,000 calories.
And other forms of angling burn even more with roving anglers burning 372 calories an hour and the most fat burn comes from fishing while wading in rivers with a gut-busting 558 calories used up.
So wading is far more than playing table tennis on 372 calories and nearly as much as playing football on 651.
The results didn’t surprise former Olympic decathlete Dean Macey.
