AN OLD school bait book helped Leighton McDonnell to bag an 8 lb 1 oz chub from the Great Ouse in Bedfordshire.

The Tring, Hertfordshire-based all-rounder accounted for what is believed to be the second biggest ever chub reported from the Great Ouse.

He dusted down a 24-year-old copy of Kempastini’s Book of Baits chose a recipe, added two fresh liquidized ingredients and threw in 20 20 mm balls half an hour before fishing to try and avoid rampant crayfish.
