POPULAR video-maker Alex Smith was thrilled to catch a PB perch of 5 lb 4 oz – but pal Luc Coppens eclipsed that stunner with this 7 lb leviathan (pictured below).

The 20-year-old younger brother of  ‘Carl and Alex Fishing’ channel fame, couldn’t believe how many big perch he and Luc caught over three days in Holland.

They teamed up with top local guide Jeroen Eijssens, and some highs from their sessions were captured on video. The quality footage has netted a massive global audience on YouTube.

Mid Sussex-based Alex said: “I’d had a long-standing perch PB of about 3 lb and this was a chance to break it.

“When I thought the day couldn’t get better I caught another PB. I will never forget this fishing trip.

“It is tough fishing, we were casting out repeatedly, hundreds of casts, and then occasionally you get a bite.

“It was possibly my best day’s fishing I’ve ever had the day I had my 5 lb 4 oz fish.

“I also caught some really nice pike and zander too.

“I’m left speechless by the amount of big perch we caught over the trip,” concluded Alex, who recently left his job at Nash Tackle, along with his older brother Carl, to focus on their Carl and Alex Fishing channel projects.

Gent, Belgium-based Luc, 53, said: “It was an amazing trip with so many big perch including fish of 5 lb, 6 lb, and 7 lb.”

Luc’s 7 lb perch would easily smash the British record perch of 6 lb 3 oz plus the International Game Fishing Association’s All-Tackle record of 6 lb 6 oz.

But bigger perch have been caught…

The Dutch record perch is 8 lb 4 oz to Stephan Gockel from the Meuse River in 2010.

There are two recorded perch of 8 lb 13 oz, from Germany and Romania.
