ANGLER’S MAIL can reveal Britain’s oldest grandmother who still bags up – 87-year-old Marion Mackay.
Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire-based Marion fished all her life, often winning matches she used to fish in with her late husband Horace.
And she showed she’s lost none of her skills last week when she outfished her grandson-in-law Ben Hickinbottom by 11 carp to five on a trip to Woodland View near Droitwich Spa.
Ben explained: “Even during the 1990s she was a very keen angler often fishing club matches with friends and Horace and more often than not out-fishing the male opposition much to their despair.
“Her favourite venue was Woodland View and she wants her ashes scattered on her favourite peg their, peg 11.
“Last year she had a knee replacement and after eight months of recovery has now got her mobility back.
“Last week I asked if she fancied wetting a line, she jumped at the chance and we headed off to Woodlands View.
“Before I could cast my line in her rod was away and she played the carp like a seasoned pro resulting in a lovely little mirror of about 3 lb, she went on to land another ten carp to 8 lb over the next four hours, more than was caught on the rest of the lakes put together. I only managed five!
“Her skill and ability surprised me, she is a natural! But for decades she fished hard and even went to Ireland every year,” he added.
