Brit aboard Michael Owen didn’t let a lack of transport from catching this PB 9 lb 7 oz big tench.

It came from a gravel pit near Geneva on the Switzerland-France borders.

The 46-year-old and originally from Warrington, but now living in St. Genis-Pouilly in the Rhone-Alps, France, added other big tench of 7 lb 12 oz, 7 lb 4 oz and 5 lb 14 oz.

The mechanical engineer at the CERN particle physics accelerator said: “My old car had finally broken down the week before.

“But I knew the tench would be good for a bite, so as I was without transport I had no option but to bike the 18-mile round trip.”

Big tench after early start

“I started peddling at 5am to arrive for first light. It was nostalgic, as it took me back to my teenage years with the gear strapped to the crossbar.

“I used a four piece Avon travel rod with a 5AAA waggler on 8 lb line straight through to a size 8 hook baited with a single piece of corn on a hair rig.

“I was stalking bubblers at close range, sometimes within 2 ft of the bank.

“These big French tench take some stopping when ambushed at close quarters, and always get my heart thumping and hands trembling.

“Long may it continue – Vive la Tanche Française!” added Michael.
