ALAN RIO had travelled across many counties to try and get a 3 lb-plus roach and finally achieved his dream with this super specimen.

The Woking, Surrey-based ace all-rounder caught the big roach he yearned for, scaling 3 lb 1 oz.

Alan told Angler’s Mail exactly how he realised the ambition.

The IT worker explained: “I’ve done it at last, after a three-year journey fishing in Surrey, Oxfordshire and Norfolk for an elusive 3 lb roach.

“I waited until conditions were favourable for roach which were low pressure, overcast and rain.”

Big roach approach

Alan continued: “On arriving I walked around looking for any signs of a roach.

“Seeing one roll at 60 yards, I soon had my gear from the car and set up in the swim for a two-night trip.

“I soon found a clear spot at similar range and put out one pint of fresh maggot.

“Tackle consisted of 50 g feeders, 4 lb Drennan Supplex line tied to a Drennan Super Specialist 18 hook.

“Tightening up to the feeder, the rig was set.

“Early the following morning I received drop-back bite. I gently steered the fish over the net cord.

“I was so pleased with this fish and had come close numerous times with lots of upper 2 lb roach from many other venues,” added Alan, who caught the 3 lb 1 oz specimen from a secret gravel pit.
