KARL BIRD smashed his perch PB with this 3 lb1 oz stripy, after travelling to lots of venues.

The 36-year-old Sleaford, Linconshire, angler told Angler’s Mail: “I was supposed to be fishing at Farmoor, in Oxfordshire, for the weekend, but storms put paid to that.

“Plan B was to fish the River Thames, but it was flooded.

“On Saturday my mate, Jim, and I racked up a record number of miles, driving to 13 places and blanking at each of them.

“We ended up at my village lake, where Jim managed a nice jack.

“Another mate who lives ‘oop north’ was going to join us, but he bailed out, deciding instead to fish a local water, catching 30-plus perch.

“On Sunday, after being housebound all day, I just had to get back out.

“The village lake did me proud last year, as I landed five two-pounders, but I just knew it contained bigger perch.

“I have struggled on there this year, having endured over a dozen blanks and catching only a couple of fish to 1 lb 8 oz.

“In the evening, in the sixth swim, a mate pulled out the first chub that I have seen from there.

“I had a take a few minutes later, and assumed that I had a chub on, too, but then a ‘unit’ came up and I started shaking. It was a 3 lb 1 oz perch, my first three-pounder.

“I went back again in the pouring rain, but this time I had my ass handed back to me, suffering my 11th blank in 15 sessions,” added Karl, who works for the Royal Air Force.
