THREE veteran anglers over 70 showed their class by landing 7 lb-plus chub from different rivers.
John Shucksmith, 73 years young, notched his big chub – scaling a personal best 7 lb 3 oz – from the upper River Witham above Lincoln.
Bassingham, Lincolnshire-based John (main picture, above) said: “The river was low and moving very slowly, I was feeding mince meat and using steak on the hook.
“I had a very gentle take which after a hard fight turned out to be a 7 lb 3 oz chub which is my largest in 50 years of fishing.
“The tackle used was a John Wilson 1.25 lb test curve with 8 lb line, a size 10 hook and quarter-ounce weight using the fixed paternoster with a 4-turn water knot,” added John.
Further south, big chub ace John Cadd notched his fourth 7 lb specimen in as many trips.
John did it with this 7 lb 4 oz specimen (below) from Christchurch AA’s Hampshire Avon stretch of Lower Winkton and Burton.
The retired 70-year-old from Ferndown, Dorset, said: “I missed a bite on the first cast but the second chuck resulted in a tiny bite using my wheat gluten spicy paste on a link ledger and size 6 hook.
“After an outstanding fight I landed another 7 lb 4 oz chub.
“I do feel it more now I’m getting older and even did myself a mischief while picking up the landing net.
“But I love my fishing and more kids should be going rather than sitting on their Xboxes and PlayStations,” added John.
And another experienced veteran specialist angler, 70-year-old Ray Kent, also landed a fantastic big chub.
He caught his PB of 7 lb 4 oz from the River Lea at Kings Weir in Hertfordshire.
Cambridge-based Ray offered a Wraysbury Bait Vanilla boilie on a very short hair with a size 14 hook.
