VETERAN big fish angling ace Fred Healey is still braving longer winter sessions and it paid-off with a fantastic brace of river fish.
Fred, from Uckfield, West Sussex, has just turned 69, but that still hasn’t put him off spending long stints on the bank even at this time of the year. The twice Angler’s Mail Specimen Cup winner caught a 7 lb 8 oz in his latest mission, and added another big chevin of 6 lb during the same trip.
Fred had been tackling an undisclosed stretch of the River Lea, in Hertfordshire, but hadn’t been having much luck with the conditions, as he explained: “This stretch is notoriously difficult and I’d only had a few bream, which wasn’t a big enough reward for the effort I was putting in.
“Due to the heavy rainfall the river had been up and down more than a ‘dumb waiter’, meaning it wasn’t favourable for the chub, but I wasn’t deterred and went back for another 48-hour session, and on the last morning had these two.”
Both of Fred’s chub fell to Nutrabaits Trigga boilies fished on size 10 hooks and wrapped in matching paste.
