In the north, two pike anglers made the grim discovery of a number of gill nets containing carp to 19 lb, pike over 9 lb, bream over 5 lb and numerous other smaller species on the River Mersey.
The pair released as many fish as they could and contacted the Environment Agency.
With the aid of reinforcements from other regions the EA later carried out a two-night surveillance resulting in arrests.
