The Sonik Xtractor 5000 Reel comes under the beady eye of Angler's Mail tackle editor Richard Howard. He's the No.1 products inspector, checking out loads of quality kit every week.

Description: mini big pit fixed-spool reel.

Specifications: black anodised long-cast spool taking 280 m of 0.35 mm line; Quick-Torque Drag system; Twin Spring-Loaded Captive Line Clips; Quick-Clik Folding Handle complete with a wooden grip; matt black finish; 5+1 ball bearings; twist-free line roller; graphite body and rotor; 4.4:1 gear ratio; micro line-lay adjustment washers; weight 415 g.

My verdict: finished in a ‘stealthy’ black colour that will appeal to many carpers, this light, mini big pit reel is the perfect partner for shorter carp rods and lighter floater set-ups.

It looks the ideal choice of reel to marry with Sonik’s short, retractable Xtractor Carp Rods.

I like the Quick Torque Drag, which quickly converts from pretty much a free-spool to a standard drag, the quick-folding handle is a nice touch, as is the wooden handle knob.

The double spring-loaded line clips are a bonus, and while you’re not likely to be buying these reels to chuck a long way, as they’re more suited to small or medium-sized waters, if a fish does poke its head out at 90 yards-plus, you’re still likely to be able to drop a bait on it.

Given the sub-£50 price tag, I think Sonik will sell a lot of these.

Price: £49.99.
