COULD what we’re currently experiencing outside be the start of spring? We certainly hope so!

This winter has been one of the longest we can remember and this little bit of sunshine almost feels tropical compared to what we have been through recently.

We haven’t had many catch reports through in the last month, and fish of the blog is most definitely one we brought news of in last month’s – Jake Lund’s stunning 37 lb mirror from a tough southern day ticket water. Jake is no stranger to big fish, and in his relatively short carp angling career has landed three UK 40 lb common’s, with his PB standing at 45 lb 1 oz!

Jake Lund edges closer to his 40lb target with this 37lb cracker

Jake landed with ACE Razor Point

Jake has made it his target this year to catch himself a 40 lb UK mirror and his most recent session saw him edge ever closer to the magical mark with his 37 lb cracker.

On arrival too the lake, Jake saw very little showing so opted to fish an area of the lake that he knew had a decent track record of producing in the cold. Without any signs of activity in his swim, he noticed a large fish head and shoulder over by an overhanging tree and with that upped sticks as quick as he could!

Not wanting to bait up too heavily, Jake catapulted a few 18mm ‘The Crave’ freezer baits over to the spot and cast his glugged 18mm bottom bait to the spot. After a short time, the bobbin rose to the top and the rod tip arched round. He then had to do his best to steer the fish away from danger, putting full faith in his tackle.

Within no time, Jake gained control and managed to play the fish out in the safety of open water, where he was soon slipping the net under his prize. The fish was landed using one of our new ACE Razor Points in BBP pattern and our Re-Action braid in 20lb.

Another angler getting amongst the fish is the ever-consistent Mike Hamer. He has remained on form all winter, banking a string of specimens over 20lb. On his most recent session, Mike opted to fish small flat bed method feeders with Dynamite Baits XL White Chocolate groundbait and an artificial white boilie as hookbait. This was fished on a short 3” long length of ACE Re-Action with a size 10 BBP Razor Point.

Mike Hamer ended up a session with not just one, but two big beauties.

After a quiet start to the day, Mike could clearly see that some fish had begun to feed as pinprick bubbles started to appear on the surface. None to surprisingly, not long after one of his rods was requiring instant attention after a decent fish took off at speed into the lake. After a short ponderous fight, Mike managed to land a lovely mirror of 25 lb 8 oz. Mike then followed this up with two more fish, one an upper double mirror and the other another mirror just over the 20 lb mark.

A successful day for Mike Hamer

With a few of our angler now getting out on the bank a lot more regularly, we are expecting to receive a lot more catch reports. Be sure to check back next month to see how the guys are getting on.
