ANGLER’S MAIL is pleased to set the record straight in our current magazine, explaining where big carp originated from in Ireland’s premier carp fishing venue. And (below) we share a video with you of the venue.
Lyreen Angling Centre produced Ireland’s carp record, known as Bighole (or Big Hole) and it topped the 40 lb mark early in 2012.
The venue, contrary to some reports is NOT called Brooklodge or Maynooth Fishery.
But more importantly the owners have told the Mail (as fully explained in our September 25, 2012 magazine issue) that the carp came from France legally, back in December 2001.
Here we bring you, online, some extra info and video…
Big carp and a lot more at Lyreen Angling Centre
Lyreen Angling Centre is found at Old Dunboyne Road, Maynooth, Co. Kildare, Ireland. It’s co-owned by Darren Whelan and Mick Walsh.
Darran said: ‘We have three lakes, the small lake (1 acre) is stocked with rainbow trout and is used as a pleasure lake for children of all ages and total beginners.
‘Lake two (2-plus acres) is a coarse/match lake stocked with carp, tench, bream, rudd, hybrids and roach. It has 30 pegs on it and is open to the general public with day tickets costing just €10 for adults and €8 for under 16’s.
‘Lake 3 (5 acres) is our pride and joy, our specimen carp-
only lake with the average carp been between 20 lb to 30 lb. The lake record mirror is 42 lb 3 oz, the lake record common is 33 lb. The lake record mirror has been featured in magazines as been Ireland’s first 40 lb carp.’
