CHEW VALLEY has produced the biggest pike of the year so far with a 38 lb beast to Phil Wakeford.

The experienced 56-year-old piker smashed his previous best of 37 lb with the Somerset stonker. It’s his ninth 30 – all coming from different venues.

Phil, a former president of the Pike Anglers Club, thought it was going to be a non-starter after boats were not allowed on the vast venue due to 35 mph winds.

The second largest catch of what has been the most productive week at the venue all winter was Roger Pitman’s stunning 34 lb croc (pictured).

Southampton, Hampshire-based Roger revealed: ‘I was float fishing in 14 ft of cloudy water with a fillet of mackerel popped up 6 in. off the bottom with two size 4 trebles when my float disappeared. I quickly wound in the slack then struck and set the hooks.’
