The bream record went past the 20 lb barrier for the first time with a 20 lb 1 oz slab to Simon Lavin from Oxfordshire’s Stoneacres Lake. The fish was sadly found dead a few weeks later.

And Dr Joshua Blavins had his crucian carp record accepted of 4 lb 9 oz Verulam AC’s Moor Mill Pits near St. Albans in Hertfordshire. It will be listed as an equal best with ace all-rounder Martin Bowler (pictured).

Martin’s was originally on the list 9 dr heavier after precise official scales checks but got rounded down in a review. And after scales tests put Josh slightly below its original 4 lb 10 oz, both now end up at the same listed weight.

With many scales weighing in half ounces, at best, more often 1 oz, it seems likely many more future claims will go down.

E-on worker Leigh kick-started the current season with the stunning perch from his local River Soar using float fished gudgeon on a size 4 hook to 6 lb line in the margins at nightfall.

This catch followed perch of 4 lb 10 oz 3 dr and 4 lb 2 oz from top commercial fishery Makins last winter.

He followed up with river carp to 29 lb from the Soar. And last week he went to a local gravel pit syndicate to take the double-figure bream along with 12 rudd from 2lb 10 oz to 3 lb 11 oz.
