PIKEPRO

£5.99 for 20 m
This 7 strand 45 lb breaking strain wire comes on a 20 m spool and is extremely springy and difficult to use. I found twisting it difficult, crimping is the better option. A very heavy-duty wire and one that I wouldn’t really feel comfortable using on the waters I fish but then this is probably designed for big powerful fish on inland seas where heavy tackle is required. I’d be interested in looking at a lighter breaking strain aimed at the more general pike angler.

30PLUS PIKE SYSTEM

£3.99 for 20 m
This 28 lb 7 strand wire comes on a 20 m dispenser and is a dull black colour that will blend in with most winter lakebeds. It’s easily crimped or twisted. On cutting the wire preformed reasonably well with just some slight splitting of fibres, however it kinks relatively easy, making it limited to the amount of fish that can be taken on a trace before weaknesses set in. Certainly far from the worst wire I’ve ever used though. Available in a good length at a very reasonable price.

FOX SOFT STEEL

£6.99 for 5 m
A 49 strand wire that’s very supple, resulting in fewer dropped runs because of the sensitivity at the business end. It can be knotted and twisted, but crimping is recommended. During the cutting test, a slight fraying was noticed which might mean there’s some loss of wire when trace making. Available in a 25 lb strain on 5 m spools it’s one of three predator Fox trace materials accompanying Carboflex and Easy Twist Trace wire available in a variety of breaking strains.

E.T. 49-STRAND

£8.99 for 10 m
This 35 lb wire is extremely limp so very hard for pike to detect when deadbaiting resulting in more pick-ups. It’s also perfect for wobbling and spinning. It will outlast and outperform standard 7 strand wire as it has a great kink resistance. When cutting, it can be snipped perfectly every time. Although it can be twisted I’d recommend crimping it. Available on 10 m spools the dispenser isn’t the best as it can result in spillage. There is also a 7 strand, 30 lb wire available on 20 m spools which is ideal for livebaiting.

TACKLE SHOP TITANIUM

£12.99 for 10 m
It’s difficult to compare this 30 lb wire to the others as it’s really high-tech gear being manufactured for hardcore pikers targeting bigger than average fish. Would I use it, could I afford to use it? Probably not, even knowing that the wire will last longer than the hooks mounted on it. At 30 lb it’s quite thick and springy which is the key to its kink resistance properties. It twists adequately and crimps easily. Probably a wire for the full-time piker.
