HOOK LENGTH RETAINING SYSTEMS – TESTED
Tested by STEVE LOCKETT
Very similar to the Maver wallet, but holds slightly fewer hooks, having 76 pegs. Utilises the same four-fold design, each flap holding a line of pegs to take hook length loops, and six neoprene pads for the hooks. Marked to show exactly how long each trace is, the pads are at 20 cm, 25 cm, 30 cm, 35 cm, 40 cm and 49 cm lengths. A good choice for long waggler or feeder traces, and better suited to smaller size 26 to 16 hooks. The tough outer cover is backed with strong cardboard.
A very popular style among match anglers, especially continentals. It lies very flat, taking up little space, and can hold 80 hooks with ease. Available in two sizes, the longer one tested here stores traces with a peg at the top and neoprene pads in five places. Maximum trace length is 37 cm, minimum is 22 cm, making this more suitable for running line rigs. The wallet has a tough, wipe clean nylon covering with a Velcro closure.
The two tough plastic cases that make up this range are very popular on the match circuit. Storing up to 36 hooks tied to traces between 15 and 60 cm, the large-sized system allows precisely measured storage. A separate set of pins on the lid allows easy tying to match the storage pins. The thin profile makes this case easy to store, and being fully enclosed, the stored hook lengths are well protected. Suitable for hooks from sizes 26-10.
Looks best suited to carpers’ rigs and match anglers’ hair-rigs. Sturdily built and allowing traces of 4 cm to 52 cm, this board will need to be carried in its dedicated box (available separately) to keep the line and hooks safe and protected from water and sunlight. Korum’s Maxi Rig Manager tackle box comes with one of these rig boards included. Soft foam and supplied pins mean various length traces will fit. Longer rigs are wrapped around the end carrying handles. Takes about 32 tied hooks.
A huge amount of thought has gone into the development of this superb storage system. MAP claim 1,200 ready-tied hooks can be stored in unique slotted foam under a UV-resistant clear lid. A carefully calibrated measuring and tying scale on each of the two lids helps accuracy when making traces. A white background allows info to be written without the need for labels. The retaining pins look best suited to hooks of sizes 26 to 12.
The sturdy construction and accessory drawers help this board take the top spot. Suitable for a wide range of traces, the longer ones wrapping around the soft-feel end handle. Hook lengths are held with a sprung peg that can be positioned along the length of the board. Up to 60 hooks can be stored. Expanding pegs allow damp braid traces to dry.
