CK CARP KINETICS SPECIAL EDITION SET

£2
A great starter kit that includes brightly coloured baiting needle, splicing/gate needle and drill that you’ll struggle to mislay. The needle handle has grip but it isn’t the easiest to use and features a hook-style point that could catch on braided hairs. It’s not a fine needle, either, at 2 mm wide. At 48 mm (total length 90 mm) it will lend itself to multiple hook bait mounting, though not necessarily small, soft ones.
SCORE: 24/30

DRENNAN

£2.10
Simple, non-grip needle, dull orange in colour. Featuring a crook head, this fine needle won’t split small soft baits or damage hairs, but on occasions it will slip off during baiting. The needle is sturdy and measures just 31 mm (total length 95 mm) and has a tapered shaft, which is great for sliding the hair down and opening it up, but its length does restrict multiple bait mounting. Also available – Ultra Fine Bait Needle £2.10.
SCORE: 25/30

GARDNER BRAIDED HAIR

£2.30
Unique safety conscious design with an Ergonomic Easi Grip black handle (also available in green) with Posi Pip green thumb button grip for ease of use in the dark. The needle incorporates a ‘braid-friendly’ ballpoint crochet-type needle that retracts for protection within its handle. Not the finest needle available, but still fine enough to reduce bait splitting, and at just 28 mm in length (total length 118 mm) it’s still long enough for multiple small bait mounting. Also available – Mini Hair Needle £1.99.
SCORE: 27/30

NASH MICRO BOILIE

£2.69
One of the finest needles tested, with a dulled down purple, good grip handle. Having a low profile safety barb located within its fine tip and having no sharp edges to fray hairs, it’s a strong, versatile product. The low diameter needle reduces the risk of splitting baits, and the slight increase in diameter in the needle base will open up small hair loops. At
38 mm long (total length 90 mm) it allows multiple baits to be mounted, and comes with a neat, protective cover. Also available – Micro Captive Boilie Needle £2.69.
SCORE: 27/30

ESP BAIT DRILL AND NEEDLE

£4.50
With one of the finest tips tested, this strong, compact needle is difficult to fault, apart from its ‘easily lost’ green colour. The low profile safety barb is located within its ultra fine tip and has no sharp edges to damage hairs. At just 1 mm in diameter, there’s no chance of splitting baits, and the slight increase to the needle’s base is good for opening hair loops. At 37 mm long (overall length 82 mm) and being ultra fine throughout, this allows for multiple bait mounting. Having adequate handle grip, the needle comes with a high quality drill, too, both covered with protective sleeves.
SCORE: 28/30

SOLAR BOILIE 5 IN 1

£13.99
Featuring a Comfort Grip Nite Glo handle, this needle set should be easy to locate by day or night. It incorporates a boilie stop dispenser inside, too. The set consists of a boilie needle, PVA stick needle, nut drill and by far the finest hair/maggot needle. Featuring a safety barb within its ultra fine needle head, there are no sharp edges to damage hairs, and its diameter will not split even the most fragile of baits. At 47 mm (overall length 128 mm), the needle increases in diameter 30 mm down, which allows hairs to be opened as well as allowing for multiple bait mounting. I’m concerned how long the handle’s plastic screw thread will last, though.
