THIS huge 18 lb 5 oz barbel has been banked to set a new River Thames record – but captor Chris Whapshott has stayed low-profile.

It beats the old venue best of 18 lb 2 oz, set in 2005 by Guy Robb, and has been accepted by the well-respected Thames Anglers Conservancy.

TAC chairman David Harvey said: “It is top of the list but the guy wants zero publicity.”

And Thames ace Neil Wayte said: “I did hear of an 18 a little while back so it could be that fish. It is a big fish, just look at the girth on it.”
