A MAN has been charged with the murder of an angler during a fishing match after a body was recovered from the Sankey St Helens Canal near Warrington, in Cheshire.

Anthony Ogburne, aged 40, from Widnes, is accused of pushing Harry Morris, aged 57, from Dallam, into the canal during a Saturday contest organised by Dallam and District Community Angling Club.

Father of six Harry is said to have been pushed into the water by a man that had been sitting on a bench behind him and had his head held underwater.

Fellow anglers gave chase through Sankey Valley Park but the man escaped into nearby woods.

Cheshire Police said a post-mortem examination revealed that Harry had drowned.
