PRAY for an end to the current cold snap – if it sticks around it will seriously damage future fish stocks.

Good spawning this spring will be affected if it persists into February as forecasters have predicted.

And after successive cold winters for three years and damaging spring and summer floods last year, it’s bad news for fish.

Meanwhile, one angler to catch despite atrocious conditions was Angler’s Mail fan Leslie Wood (pictured) who notched a 16 lb 6 oz pike in think snow in -5 on a small Lincolnshire river.

Car salesman Les, 38, from Clowne, Derbyshire, said: ‘Only mad people go pike fishing when it is -5! Sometimes it pays off though.’
