BARBEL ace Jerry Gleeson made a last-minute decision he will never forget when he chose to fish Derbyshire’s River Derwent late one evening. It brought him a whopping 16 lb 12 oz whisker!

Stockport, Cheshire-based Jerry pre-baited for barbel with Mad Baits Pandemic micro pellets, broken 18 mm boilies and some dumbbells.

He then let the swim rest for 30 minutes before lowering baits into the river about half a rod length out.

Ten minutes later the fish was on, and after a spirited scrap lasting ten minutes, he was sliding a net under the huge PB barbel.

Jerry said: “A big Derwent fish was my target this year and after four visits I had perhaps the biggest in the river.

“I’m absolutely elated to have caught such a magnificent creature and this has to rank as one of my best personal moments in barbel fishing.

“12 hours later I’m still shaking at the thought of it,” added Jerry, who has done great work raising money in recent years, with other barbel specialists on a multi-river challenge, for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.
