Grayling fed through the cold
IT’S warming up out there, with water temperatures climbing everywhere, which should mean most species will feed.
But during the freeze up, one species keen specialist anglers have made an effort to target is grayling. You can see two absolute monsters in Angler’s Mail magazine this week (cover-dated February 14).
Nash Tackle operations director Alan Blair is used to working with carp gear, and fishing for the species, but he had a top trotting session on Hampshire’s River Test topped by a 2 lb 3 oz grayling in a good mixed haul.
Essex-based Alan used a large Avon float with 4 lb main line and a 2.5 lb hooklink with a size 18 Kamasan hook top present a double maggot hookbait that had been flavoured with Nashbait Scopex No.1 or used a small cage feeder.
Alan said: ‘I caught about 12-15 grayling with another three around the 2 lb mark along with some nice chub, trout and sea trout.
‘Although the river wasn’t carrying a lot of extra water the better fish were to be found in the slacks as apposed to the main flow,’ he added.
Alan will be in Angler’s Mail magazine soon in a special perch feature – not to be missed!Like Angler's Mail? Subscribe to the magazine for the latest comprehensive content.
