THE tench trail has really kicked-off as despite cooler weather as the spring-time favourite has gone on the munch.

James Gould

A Midlands pit is proving kind to spessy ace James Gould where he took a monster 25 tinca haul topped by a 10 lb 1 oz specimen plus three nine-pounders.

The 36-year-old from Barnsley, South Yorkshire said: “I started early in April trying to locate the tench. The odd fish graced the bank but success really followed a late arrival one evening where I sat in my mates swim and had a beer whilst watching for signs of fish.

“I saw a lot showing straight across in a swim I hadn’t fished before so decided to give it a go. I used a Spomb to put a small bed of maggots, hemp and micro pellet out on two spots I located with the marker rod.

“One at 20 yards just over the near side shelf and the other at 36 yards adjacent a small weedbed.

“My strategy was to fish the Drennan inline maggot feeder with short mono traces and Drennan artificial buoyant red maggots on a D-ring to a size 14 hook,” concluded the quantity surveyor.
