UNSUNG angling hero Martin James has picked up his MBE from Buckingham Palace in honour of his charity work.

The BBC Radio Lancashire angling show presenter received the gong from keen angler Prince Charles in a lavish ceremony.

Martin revealed: ‘I first heard in April with a letter from the Cabinet Office but I wasn’t allowed to tell anybody till June 16.

‘On June 16th itself I was fishing with Gary Newman and was being interviewed over the phone by the Radio Lancashire news team when I had a bit and had to play a 6 lb tench while answering their questions.

‘I was due to receive it in October but my daughter was planning a 75th birthday party for me so I told the Cabinet Office and the lady there said it wasn’t a problem and put my visit to Buckingham Palace back a  few months.

‘When I arrived last week the lady came up to me and asked if I’d had a nice birthday in Dubai so that was a nice touch.

‘When I was called up it said it was to honour my work for charity, conservation and angling and when I got the MBE from Prince Charles he asked was I still going fishing a lot.

‘It was magic moment I won’t forgot for the rest of my life and I felt quite humble to be there. I remembered when I first saw Buckingham Palace as a ten-year-old, peering through the railing with my family.’
