THE MOST EFFECTIVE METHOD?

WHAT do you want from your fishing? Do you set-out to fish the most effective method and hopefully bag a few, or is the style of fishing sometimes more of a priority?

The girlfriend and I decided to fish for the evening, the other weekend, we’d been busy and both needed to get out and get some fresh air.

I grabbed a few bits, 1.75 lb rods, ‘mini freespools’, some Korum Dura-Method Feeders, (see this weeks Mail Action Replay) Sonubaits groundbait, Enterprise Classic flavour plastic corn and quickly tied a few rigs.

Susannah with one of half a dozen carp to low double-figures.

We headed to a local day ticket water, and went to the end of the lake a south westerly wind was blowing into, always a good bet. We then settled on two swims that allowed us to cover a bit of water if we needed to, fishing one rod each.

As I scanned the water, a carp rolled close-in, no need to cast too far out then. I’d pretied size 12 hooks with short hairs to 4 in. of 15 lb braid. But I could have just as easily grabbed off-the-shelf Korum or Drennan Method rigs.

I then scanned the Method Feeder (complete with its camou Quick–Change bead, and sprung loaded Mould) instructions on the packaging, just to refresh my memory.

I followed the recommended mixing instructions on the groundbait bag, it turned out light and airy but compressed well, so far so good. I looped my hook link onto the quick-change bead, and threaded a piece of very well used pop-up Tutti Frutti flavoured plastic corn on. We were ready to go.

The rods went out and within 20 minutes we’re away. Over the next three hours we fished badly, but had six carp to low-doubles including two on at once, whilst an angler fishing on the end of the wind, close-by, and concentrating hard on the float, struggled for one carp and some bits.

As I said earlier we fished badly, my girlfriend was honing her casting skills, so the method ball was sometimes launched skywards, and sometimes dropping short, that’s learning.

We missed the odd pick-up and also had the odd ‘rattle’ and dropped bait too, whilst attending to fish in the net. Plus at least one fish came adrift whilst being played in, our fault. We should have had close on double the amount we landed.

We even ran out of prepared feed just an hour before dark, ‘the witching hour’ when you would expect to have two or three more fish. And the stodgy mix I rushed up, without resting it to absorb the water, didn’t impress the carp. Bad angling on my part, but we had to be off by darkness.

My point is despite fishing badly, wherever the Method feeder landed it was a ready-to go-fish trap, waiting to be sprung with a ‘tutti corn’ cherry-on-the-cake.

We followed simple instructions, on the feeder/groundbait packaging, that anyone could follow, caught fish and enjoyed it. It seemed that easy, admittedly the water isn’t hard, but we could have easily struggled, if we’d opted for the float too.

I remember a very similar scenario on another session, several anglers sticking it out on the float and struggling…whilst The Method produced fish after fish.

On a lot of commercial fisheries, for the next few months, I’d say that the Method feeder is as close to a banker method as you can get for some bites, for everyone from the beginner to the experienced. You haven’t got to worry about beating the wind or the undertow, or shotting patterns, just stopping your rod being pulled in!

Why struggle on the float, when there is such a productive, simple to set-up and fish alternative? I don’t like seeing people missing out on good sport!

FREE ROD LICENCE. Try and take advantage of this weeks free rod licence voucher in the Mail to take a friend fishing over the spring Bank Holiday.

YOU MAKE YOUR OWN LUCK. Good angling Darren Norman, page 8 in this weeks Mail. He moved to where he’d heard a big fish crash in the night, and bagged heavyweight carp of 50 lb 4 oz, 44 lb 10 oz and 37 lb 10 oz on Hampshire’s Roach Pit. Including the lakes biggest resident.

AM DISLIKE OF THE WEEK

GILL NETS FOUND. Containing 29 bream from 4-8 lb that were preparing to spawn on the Kelsey Drain, near Boston, Lincolnshire. Jim Tyree makes a valid point that lifting the Close Season will make it harder for poachers to operate.

IT’S BAGGING TIME – FOLLOW THE EXPERTS’ TIPS…

I DON’T think we have ever had fishing so good if you’re into amassing huge nets of carp. And this is the time to do it, as all around the country match results are soaring into the three -figure marks but there is a skill to it, and you have to be prepared.

I’m in the very fortunate position to be able to sit behind anglers whilst they are doing there best to fill as many nets as possible and break that ton, and more commonly the double ton!

And to do this there is no real secrets, just a lot of preparation, and I managed to glean a few tips of the very best to give you the chance of breaking the 100 lb barrier this summer.

1. Preparation

Simple as this may seem, the way you prepare your gear for a session could be THE difference between winning or losing. Make no mistake, the Les Thompsons, Des Shipps, and other greats all prepare to win, and nothing is left to chance.

The night before, make everything tidy, don’t just throw your stuff in the carryall. Get a situation going where you know where everything is, bait boxes nicely stacked, pellet pumps where they are supposed to be, and everything tidy, so when you get to your peg, there is less time messing and more time assessing!

2. Double up

Again this may seem simple to most, but having duplicates or more of everything really helps your rhythm, as there is nothing worse than seeing lumps down the inside, and discovering that you have tangled your margin rig 2 hours earlier whilst trying something daft! Get it sorted have one or more tied up exactly the same, it doesn’t take much effort.

I have lost count of the number of times I have seen anglers ruin a margin swim, by having to stand up and mess around in there boxes looking for stuff to Heath Robinson a rig together in the last hour.

Next time you tie a rig, tie two, when you buy a catapult, get another, but make sure you always have a spare.

3. KISS

This is something I see all the best do: Keep It Simple, Stupid.

When I do a feature with a top flight angler you will notice on his side tray, very little, the bare essentials. His bait will be kept simple, and everything is to hand.

Now when I am doing a feature with a club level angler. His side tray will look like Steptoe’s back yard, it will be a mess guaranteed, too many baits, too many different types of floats and too much crap!

Next time you see an Action Replay in the Angler’s Mail, pay attention to the side trays of the greats and have a look…. it will be as tidy as Gok Wan’s sock draw.

4. Don’t tire a swim out

When you’re catching from a particular area of your peg, it’s very easy to keep flogging it to death. We have all done it, and caught until the area dies out, or sometimes we are very lucky and it doesn’t.

But again one thing I have learned from the stars is that even if they are having a bite-a-chuck in a particular area, they will still give it a rest and try another part of their swim. This maybe even better that the bite-a-chuck area, producing bigger fish sometimes. It’s hard to do, and takes discipline but it’s worthwhile.

5. At arm’s length

If there is one thing I have taken away from doing features with great anglers is that they always have an area of the swim they can feed by hand, and in particular with real regularity.

The bait keeps going in little and often, but it never stops raining bait, it may be only two or three casters, one cube of meat, but whatever it is, they never stop doing it.

I have seen 40lb to 50lb put in the net in the last few minutes of a match on this line. So throw a few casters as far as you can and get into a rhythm of doing it, then fish it out.

All of these lessons I have managed to learn, they are not my tips – I am crap – but if you could just put one them into practise this weekend on your club match it might just make the difference.

It’s getting harder and harder to sort out a worthy winner of this award each week, as I have been hearing about some spectacular performances this weekend, but I have to pick one…

This week the Angler’s Mail performance of the week award goes to the North East of the country where a mammoth 159 pegger took place at Lindholme Fisheries. And it was John Barningham who took the honours with a 109lb 9oz bag, at the Big Bash charity match, from peg 69 on Laurels, beating young Frankie G into second place.

Take a bow John. It’s always nice to win a huge match, even better when it’s for a good cause.

ANGLER’S MAIL magazine has helped launch the Search For Peter, to help select youngsters who will appear in the second series of Fishing in the Footsteps of Mr. Crabtree.

The shows will star John Bailey, the Angler’s Mail magazine columnist, and will be shown on Quest TV.

Full details appear in the magazine, as the search launches officially on May 21. The makers say this time they will be setting some new and greater challenges.

The Quest for ‘Peter’ will kick off with a very simple question – “What’s your Crabtree Quest?”

To enter, visit the official Mr Crabtree website (click here), where you can also purchase exclusive merchandise. But first read the details below….

The Quest for ‘Peter’ – Entry Conditions

1. ‘Peter’ can be a Girl or a Boy

2. ‘Peter’ needs to be aged between 8 and 14

3. ‘Peter’ will most likely have fished already but doesn’t have to be an accomplished angler

4. ‘Peter’ will be expected to adhere to certain standards of behaviour – we are looking for a role model for other children, someone who can help us uphold and preserve the Crabtree values

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

(Thanks to programme makers Toast Entertainment Group for the answers)

Q: Do I have to tell my parents?

A: Absolutely – you need permission from a parent or legal guardian and they’ll have to read the terms and conditions and complete a section of the entry form so make sure you talk to them first.

Q: What happens after I enter?

A: You’ll receive an email confirming that your details have been logged and telling you what happens next. The web entry closes on the Glorious 16th and Team Crabtree will be hard at work after that date shortlisting all the entries.

Q: If I’m shortlisted, then what?

A: All of the shortlisted applicants will receive email instructions on the next stage – it’s like a secret mission!

Q: So if I don’t hear anything, that means I haven’t got through?

A: We’re afraid so – unfortunately it’s going to be impossible for us to contact everyone individually as planning for filming and so on takes up so much of our time. But you can stay in touch with us via the website, our newsletter and Facebook and Twitter (if you’re old enough).

Q: I was shortlisted in the first Search for ‘Peter’ – can I enter again?

A: Yes of course you can. Other than the ‘Peters’ who appeared in the series, everyone can apply and everyone stands the same chance of winning.

Q: Who will be making the final decision about the winners?

A: There’s going to be a panel of judges making that really tough decision – more details coming soon.
