Visitors should find plenty of silver fish in all the neatly laid out pools easy enough to entice with maggots, pinkies and bread punch all viable baits in this cold weather period. Tickets are £7. The River Ancholme around Brigg, North Lincolnshire offers some decent sport in the winter, mostly with perch, roach and pike. Call Brigg Angling Centre on 01652 651 650.

Highfield at Hambleton, Lancashire, is stuffed with ide in the largest lake, and these usually provide nice, consistent sport even when it’s chilly. Call 01253 701929.

Eden Meadows, located at Trimdon, up in County Durham, is a venue offering three nice sized pools, and the possibility of catching a variety of silver fish type species such as roach and some quality ide too, up to 3 lb. Call 01429 835836. Tickets are £7.

Hayfield Lakes at Doncaster remain one of the most reliable spots in the South Yorkshire area. The consistency comes from the extra depth of water, which is up to four metres in places. Call Rob on 01302 864555.

WALES

THE most consistent River Wye fishing is still with grayling in the higher reaches just downstream of Builth Wells in Powys (01982 551520).

Work done to provide extra fishing space by clearing the quarter-acre weeded and silted area has driven the fish out from their shelter in to the lake and given sport a boost at Tranquility, Leeswood near Wrexham in North Wales (07767 880005).

Carp fishing is quiet at Hendre Lake, Cardiff (07974 053322) but the bream and roach are feeding well.

In North Yorkshire the River Ure offers the chance of chub and quality perch. You have to work for your prizes here, and that entails travelling light and trying a few spots. Call (01765) 635115.

In East Yorkshire the River Hull around Beverley and up to Hempholme can be well worth a look at this time of year. Call 01482 869948.

Cheshire’s River Dane often fishes better in the winter months. The key is persistence here. Tel: 01606 833853.

Finally, Lancashire’s River Ribble is in spanking good form for loads of dace, chub, and barbel. Call 01772 253 476.

WALES

Frosts are hitting sport on many fisheries, but sheltered Lower Pen y clawdd Farm at Dingestow in Monmouthshire (01600 740223) has fared better than most.

The lower reaches of the River Wye are unpredictable as the level has been rising and falling daily; but upstream near Builth Wells (01982 551520) dace and grayling have been feeding.
Maintenance work is going on at Conwy Water Gardens, Rowen near Conwy in Gwynedd (01492 650063) so only the middle and bottom lakes are open for fishing at the moment; but both are worth a visit.

The lovely River Wharfe from Pool down to Tadcaster holds rich stocks of quality pike, perch and chub. Targeting them successfully usually requires a mobile approach. Call 0113 248 2373.

Well worth exploring for its superb pike is the prolific Stainforth and Keadby Canal, around Thorne, and beyond, in South Yorkshire. I rate this venue very highly for its pike potential. Call 01302 846 623.

Winterley Pools, near Sandbach, Cheshire offers two day ticket pools with plenty of pike in them amongst other species. Call Mark Colclough on 07761 069360.

Pottery Pond, Strensall, near York, North Yorkshire, is a former clay pit set in six acres of quiet woodland. Night fishing is on offer by prior application. Call 01347 810617. Tickets start at £10 for three rods.

WALES

THE two-acre lake at Llyn Blodyn Fishery between Amlwch and Benllech on Anglesey (01248 410882) is fishing well for mirror and common carp.

The River Severn in Powys had settled down after all the rain and a lot of dace are showing up at Leighton Bridge near Welshpool (01938 590129).

Pike anglers are doing well on the Newport AA stretch of the River Wye at Symonds Yat (01633 852601).

Angel of the North Lakes, Newcastle, Tyne and Wear. Here Bowes Lake has produced some large fish.

On Lookout good numbers of silvers are being caught, and carp are responsive early and late. Call 0191 410 0449.

Lindholme Lakes are still producing fabulous catches for match and pleasure anglers alike. Target the carp on meat or pellets on the pole and you won’t go far wrong. Call 01427 872905.

In North Yorkshire the terrific sport continues at The Oaks at Sessay, where you can expect a busy day’s fishing no matter which lake you choose to fish. Call 01845 501321.

In Cheshire sport has been hectic at Brookside, Stretton, near Warrington, with plenty of 70 lb-plus hauls still being made from the match pools. Call 01925 730893

Four Seasons, near Blackpool, Lancashire, is probably on its best run of form since opening last year. Lodge Lake continues to throw up special fish one after another. Call 01253 894357.

WALES

THE River Wye is still up and down with the rain, but downstream from Builth Wells to Glasbury (01982 551520) the dace are feeding in the coloured water.

Dace are also about in large numbers around Hereford (01432 344644).

Newport AA’s ‘commercial style’ stocking policy at School Pool in Gwent (01633 852601) is really paying off with club membership soaring and anglers travelling from all areas for all-action £5 day ticket fishing.

Near Bargoed in Mid Glamorgan, Rhymney AS Darran Park Lake (01685 840122) is full of F1s, commons and mirrors, including some big fish.

WALES

The River Dee (01244 345069) and all the popular areas along the Welsh border are fishing well.

Down in South Wales the River Taff (01432 344644) has benefited from a flush through.
